Why Do I Do This?

I was giving a private lesson yesterday and was asked a poignant question: "I watch how you use this game to help people grow, but has it done anything for you personally?" Gave me pause. I'd never taken the time to ask it out loud, so here goes. Why do I do this?

I do this because I love chess. I love the essence of the game and all it teaches. NOTG is like one of my children: it gives me so much in terms of knowledge, energy, lessons, joy. And all it asks for in return is my time. It has taught me when to be patient, and when to assert. It has taught me when to sacrifice and when to hold on. It has heightened my appreciation for both "pawns" and "kings" and everything in between. It has taught me to respect the "L"s you take as much as the "W"s you give...and to understand that I earned both of them. And as I grow in this beautiful game, my task is to give all I've learned to all who want to know. So thank you sis for asking the question.
