I have a 13 year old student who is pretty good on the chess board. Has even beaten me a few times. As we met for a lesson recently, he sat at the board with a bit more confidence in his eyes. We shook hands and started the game. On the second move, I did something so arbitrary, so completely against all I had taught him, that his confidence morphed into confusion. I checkmated him 10 moves later.

The only guarantee in life is that change will happen. Your best bet: expect it and accept it. Leaders and innovators understand that change is the dynamo which makes things move. Resist the urge to become complacent because what you've been doing has always been "good enough". If the unexpected is going to catch anyone off guard, let it be your opponents or your competitors. Calculate your "craziness" and while they are scratching their heads, look for the checkmate. To get what you've never had, you have to do what you've never done.
