Small Things...Big Difference

Was giving a chess lesson the other day to a young student and I asked him what he knew about pawns. He told me how they moved, how they captured, and how (if they reach the other end of the board) they can turn into any other piece. But the most telling thing he said before all of that was "they are the least important piece". We played a game and I promptly checkmated him...using a pawn.

There is an African proverb that states, "If you don't think small things matter, you have never slept in a tent with a mosquito." It's the little things in life that make the biggest difference. Try not saying "thank you" to a client or rush a customer through a sale and watch how quickly your reputation can be vilified. But this also works in the positive. A kind word to a struggling employee. A smile to an insecure child. A thank you note to a long time customer. A hug to a tired spouse. These are the things that can turn a school, a company, a relationship in a beautifully beneficial direction. Sure, it's nice to be a part of "grand" things.
