From the first pawn move to the final mate, everything on the chess board is about choice. Every move has either a benefit or a consequence...and sometimes both. I will often ask my students "why" when they make a questionable move. Often the response is, "Well, I was hoping...". Ladies and gentlemen, "hope" is not a strategy.

Teams don't gel, companies don't grow, margins don't increase, test scores don't rise, and our children don't walk into their greatness by "hope". Leaders must make conscious, focused (and often difficult) choices to move the needle. Leaving our queen exposed HOPING that our opponent doesn't see it is not wise. In the same vein, it is unintelligent to leave our finances, business plans, and our children exposed HOPING they find their way. Don't leave your greatest assets to chance.
